GAME OF THE WEEK

UConn (1-2) at SMU (3-1)
Gerald J. Ford Stadium, Dallas
Line: Mustangs -17 / 73.5
TV: 3:00, ESPNews

The UConn Huskies and SMU Mustangs meet Saturday in college
football action at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
The UConn Huskies would love to snap back-to-back losses and get
back to a .500 record. The Huskies have lost seven straight road
games. Bryant Shirreffs is completing 65.4 percent of his passes for
757 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. Shirreffs has two or
more touchdown passes in four of his last seven games. Arkeel Newsome
and Hergy Mayala have combined for 438 receiving yards and four
touchdowns while Mason Donaldson has six receptions. UConn’s ground
game is averaging 185.6 yards per contest, and Nate Hopkins leads the
way with 196 yards and four touchdowns.
Defensively, UConn is allowing 33 points and 556.3 yards per
game. Junior Joseph leads the UConn Huskies with 22 tackles, Cole
Ormsby has two sacks and Tyler Coyle has one interception.
The SMU Mustangs look for another home victory to build on their
impressive 3-1 start to the CFB season. SMU has split their last eight
home games. Ben Hicks is completing 48.8 percent of his passes for 995
yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions. Hicks has two or more
touchdown passes in seven straight games. Trey Quinn and James Proche
have combined for 598 receiving yards and five touchdowns while
Courtland Sutton has 13 receptions. The SMU Mustangs ground game is
averaging 195 yards per contest, and Xavier Jones leads the way with
296 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, SMU is allowing 30.8 points and 439.5 yards per
game. Mikial Onu leads the SMU Mustangs with 34 tackles, Kyran
Mitchell has three sacks and Jordan Wyatt has two interceptions.
UConn is 6-21-1 ATS in their last 28 road games, 0-5 ATS in their
last 5 conference games and 14-38-1 ATS in their last 53 games
overall. SMU is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games, 5-2 ATS in their
last 7 conference games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The
over is 4-1 in SMU’s last 5 games overall and the under is 19-9 in
UC’s last 28 games overall.
UConn lost at home to East Carolina, lost by 20 points to
Virginia and only beat Holy Cross by a touchdown. While there’s more
talent than that resume would indicate, the Huskies simply aren’t
getting the job done and are hard to trust at the moment. SMU isn’t
the best defensive team in the world, but the offensive firepower is
there, and they should have little trouble moving the football in this
game considering UConn has allowed a combined 79 points in its last
two games.
Pick: SMU 42 UConn 21
