Texas High School Playoff Football Opens College Conference Championship Weekend
CARROLLTON, Texas – While the Power Five conferences and “Next Five” circuits tangled for possible berths in the College Football Playoff and major bowl berths, the Texas University Interscholastic League playoffs moved into their third rounds Friday and Saturday nights.
Those Friday night lights were shining at Standridge Stadium here when two mega-growing Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs’ prep schools squared off with Mansfield Lakeridge (now 12-1) and Prosper (10-3) met for a position in the Class 5A postseason standings. Lakeridge ground out a 38-28 triumph to advance.
And the game lived up to most of the high-scoring standards of higher-classification Texas football with both teams scoring on their opening drives.
1,000-yards-plus rusher Cartraven Walker carried 12 times for 161 yards in the first half alone for Lakeridge while Prosper QB Keegan Shoemaker lived up to his advance billing with a 28-point first half with 12-for-18 passing, 163 yards and two TDs.
And that’s where Shoemaker’s passing savvy appeared to hit a wall. Lakeridge made some halftime adjustments, passed for an additional 116 yards in the final 24 minutes and simply ground out large chunks of yardage while scoring 24 unanswered markers to erase Prosper’s 28-14 halftime advantage. Plus, the winners limited the PHS quarterback to three net yards passing in the last two quarters.
Meanwhile, Walker did most of the infantry damage for the Mansfield power with 23 carries for 245 yards – 119 more than Prosper’s team total of 126 net yards – and four rushing scores. Quarterback Jason Bean overcame a fourth quarter minor stinger to carry 12 times for 84 yards while RB Dewone Jackson added 63 rushing yards to his team’s total 374 net yards on the ground. The winners also ground out a clock-eating 26 first downs – 15 in the second half and reached the 522-yard mark in total offense.
Prosper’s standout RB Kaleb Adams also rushed for 51 yards in the first two periods but appeared to have suffered an injury and did not play in the final half. Backs DJ Love (nine carries for 35 yards) and David Alvarez (34 yards on seven tries) were not able to take up the slack. Love did manage to pace both teams with eight catches for 102 yards and a 11-yard TD toss from Shoemaker early in the second quarter.
Just as many of the neighboring NFL Dallas Cowboys contests in recent weeks, the playoff was a tale of two halves with Lakeridge holding a 17-0 edge in the all-important final half.
The City of Carrollton’s former “Carrollton Green” motto for its ample landscape and parklands could have been the theme of this night as both squads were attired in crisp green and white colors. Both schools also were nicknamed the Eagles as well in a guaranteed green and Eagles victory evening.
Lakeridge moves on to face the winner of the Highland Park-Mansfield Summit playoff encounter as HPHS, led by Dallas Cowboys owner and former Arkansas standout Jerry Jones’ grandson – QB John Stephen Jones – was leading 45-20 over Summit through three quarters of a later game Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
