2018 Winter Olympics Low Focus Compared to Past
(Commentary By Travis McMillan)
The focus and attention on this year’s Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea is incredibly low compared to Winter Olympics of the past.
There are many potential reasons as to why this is the case, from the National Hockey League choosing to withhold their players from the Olympic Hockey Tournament to just a general sports exhaustion in the American media market after the end of the NFL’s season. Even with all this being the case I am sure that we will still see some stars come out of this winter’s Olympics.
A figure skater will capture the hearts of America, or perhaps one of the American skiers will flash brilliance and overtake the airwaves over the next few weeks, somehow someway even when people do not come into the Olympics with excitement they always seem to leave with it.
There is something special about watching the red white and blue compete against the world in a variety of competitions and it always seems to embolden us to look at the world in a different light.
Whether it is the acrobatics of the extreme sports competitions or the beauty of ice dancing there is something about the Olympics that lights a flame in our hearts as Americans and as members of the world.
Frisco Lone Star HS Downs Frisco HS in Boys Hoops
By Travis McMillan
Frisco Lone Star defeated shorthanded Frisco High in the final game of their district 6-5A season 68-44. Lone Star was lead by Isaiah Lewis in scoring with 15 points as they easily dealt with Frisco to head in to the upcoming playoffs.
Frisco was shorthanded during the game due to the flu running through the school.
“We played with three seniors and had three starters out with the flu and an injury. That’s the way it has been this season,” said Frisco Head Coach Andy Steele.
Lone Star will now head into the playoffs after finishing second in district with a 11-3 record in district and 18-12 overall. Lone Star’s Marvin Mims went out of the game in the second quarter with a lower leg injury and was one of the top scorers for his team at the time with 8 points.
Finishing the season 10-21 overall and 5-9 in district was a disappointment for Frisco but after such heavy attrition from the year before that is to be expected. However, there is hope for in the future.
“We had 11 seniors and finished 11-3 in the district last year, so we had to get a lot of younger players experienced in a hurry,” said Steele. “We do have a pretty good freshman team.”
