Meissner Unanimously Named AAC Freshman Of The Year

Meissner, Townsend Named To All-Conference Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) – McClure Meissner was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year by unanimous decision, while Gray Townsend joined him on the All-Conference team.

Meissner, who was selected to play in the 2018 NCAA Norman Regional, competed in all 10 tournaments and led the Mustangs with a 71.08 scoring average. The freshman logged three top-10 finishes, highlighted by a tied for fifth-place finish at the American Athletic Conference Tournament. The San Antonio, native, who is the No. 9-ranked freshman in the country by GolfStat finished in the top-20 seven times, five of which came during the spring slate.

Townsend picked up his second consecutive All-Conference accolade after posting a season-best tied for fifth finish at The American Conference championship. The senior competed in nine of the 10 tournaments in 2017-18, with three top-15 marks and a team second-best scoring average of 73.33. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native, competed in 32 career events during his tenure on The Hilltop, posting a 73.86 scoring average. The senior recorded nine top-20 finishes in the Mustang uniform, highlighted by three top-10 marks including a victory at the 2016 Marquette Invitational and a pair of top-5 finishes at the American Athletic Conference Championship.
