Tom’s Tip: The “Teeter-Totter Toss” Drill

As we enter one of the hottest month’s of the year I thought I
would show you a great drill that is sure to generate some heat in
your golf swing. This week’s tip will greatly assist you in staying
down on shots through the impact area and slighly beyond.
One of the biggest issues I see regularly teaching the game is
how many players tend to bail on shots too early… coming out of
posture prematurely.

In the sequence of photos I have a female student demonstrating a
drill called the “Teeter-Totter Toss”. A typical teeter-totter (or see
saw) is a long, narrow board pivoted in the middle so that, as one end
goes up, the other goes down. (The female golfer is left-hander so all
you right-handed golfers just reverse the process.)
All you need for this drill is a golf ball. If you don’t have
anybody on the receiving end to catch the ball that’s fine as you can
practice tossing the ball to a target either in your house or

First, she set up with her right hand on top of the club as you
can see in the top left photo. She’s taken her normal stance with a
golf ball in her left hand then placed her right hand on top of club
to be used as leverage.

Next, with the golf ball in her left hand, she makes her
backswing which you can see in the top right photograph. Take special
notice how well she has remained bent over from the waist… from her
starting point all the way to the top of the backswing, which is

Once you’ve bent over from the waist keep that good spinal tilt
throughout the entire swing. The teeter-totter analogy can be seen
quite clearly here as her left shoulder has moved upwards and the
right shoulder is pointing downwards.

Next start the downswing transition (bottom left photo) arriving
back at the initial starting position. From this angle you can see the ball is
still in the left hand as she didn’t release it too early.

The bottom right photo showcases her executing the perfect
release of the golf ball towards my outreached hand. I’ve drawn a
circle around the golf ball traveling towards the intended target.

In both of the bottom photos you can see how well the golfer has
stayed bent over and down through tossing of the ball. The right hand
on top of the club acts as a brace, it keeps her from moving too
laterally which would automatically force her to come up and out of

The teeter-totter effect is working good, her left shoulder is
working downward and right shoulder is going slightly upwards. She’s
making a motion similar to a boxer making an upper-cut punch,
delivering maximum power into her shot or in this case releasing the
ball with authority.

I always like to have my students do this exercise because it can
immediately pinpoint areas of concern without even hitting a golf
ball. It can be an eye opening experience for players. Imagine if you
can’t toss the ball underhanded with either hand towards an intended
target, with any degree of efficiency, how do you think you’re going
to do with a golf club in your hand.

This drill is extremely effective and a real game changer if you
put a little time in practice into it. Then, after you get comfortable
with it, go ahead and grab your golf club and practice making slow
motion swings with just your left hand and then alternate with your
right hand. Gradually you’ll allow this specifically designed drill to
mesh with the actual golf club, training your mind and body to make
the correct movements resulting in the shots you desire.

This is an excellent, easy and precise way to practice without
ever hitting a golf ball and can have major ramifications in improving
your golf game. I highly recommend that you give it a try.
