For most of the 2012 calendar year I’ve been talking about the Texas Rangers and the Major League Baseball season. Sure it’s been a lot of fun and there has been plenty to talk about from Josh Hamilton’s off the field problems, his hot streak to begin the season, his record breaking cold slump, and then coming around full circle.

We worked our way to the trade deadline and talked about the acquisition of Ryan Dempster and Geovany Soto, in separate deals, from the Chicago Cubs.

We’ve also talked about the unfortunate, okay the fortunate, collapse of the Los Angeles [don’t call them Anaheim] Angels.

There’s been so much on our baseball plate that we haven’t even seen the college football season coming. Ok, maybe a few of you have, but the die hard baseball fans live and die with every Ranger game that comes along. They watch the games and they interact with their Ranger brethren on just about every social media outlet they can find.

But, if we put baseball aside for a moment and I asked you where your allegiance lied when college football season began, how many directions would one fan base go in? Can you imagine if you asked 50,000 fans at Rangers Ballpark to take off the Ranger colors and don their college football colors how many teams would be represented?

That’s what I love about college football. One fan base of one team could become fan bases of more than 100 universities in this great country of ours.

So, with that in mind, I wanted to have a little fun with this column. I wanted to see how many responses I could get in the comment sections or you can respond to me on twitter (@T_Kaufmann) or by email (tkaufmann@sportspagedallas.com).

Of all the Ranger fans who follow me on the twitterverse or who read this column on a daily basis, thank you by the way if you do, where does your allegiance lye when the first game of the college football season kicks off?

Are you all Texas Longhorn fans? Do you do the reverse hook ’em because you’re a Texas A&M, Texas Tech or Oklahoma fan? Do you do the tomahawk chop of Florida State or the gator chomp of the Florida Gators? How about the ‘Fight On’ of USC?

How about the mid-major schools like SMU, Tulsa, or out west with San Diego State or the BCS Buster of Boise State?

This is exactly why I love college football. While most Texas Rangers’ fans may throw on their Dallas Cowboy gear come Sunday, I have a feeling you would be surprised at the allegiances when Saturday morning comes around and each fan gets ready to root on their alma mater or the school they grew up rooting for.

For me, it’s the Bulldogs of Fresno State. My red and white goes on come Saturday and though it’s been a rough few years for the ‘Dogs, a new era with Coach Tim DeRuyter, formerly of Texas A&M, and new offensive and defensive schemes in place, this could be a big turnaround year for this program.

So let’s talk some college football. Who are you rooting for when Saturday comes around? Which fight song are you signing with each touchdown and when is your rivalry game?

I promise we’ll get back to baseball tomorrow but, for now, where’s your allegiance
