My goodness, did Ryan Palmer scorch the Colonial on Thursday.

Palmer’s round included eight birdies and no bogeys for an opening-round 62. He went out in 31 and came back in with 31 more. A Colonial member since 2010, Palmer started out playing like he owned the place. Palmer teed off his first round on No. 10 and proceeded to birdie holes 14 through 17 — 3 par-4s and a par-3. He cooled off after that, only making birdie on one of his next six holes, but then he finished strong by finishing with four straight 3s, which meant birdies on 6, 7 and 9.

“This is what I dream about when I play here every year,” Palmer said. “This is the one tournament I gear up for the most.”

Palmer holds a one-stroke lead over John Rollins going into Friday’s Round 2.

The biggest names near the top of the heap are Matt Kuchar and local legend Jordan Spieth,  both tied for seventh at 5-under.

Defending champion Zach Johnson had a mediocre day for him at Colonial as he fired a 1-under 69. Crowne Plaza poster boy Rickie Fowler is also 1-under through 18.

In the relative superstars category, John Daly and Tom Lehman are tied for 1o3rd at 2-over, while Corey Pavin is a stroke better in a tie for 89th. Vijay Singh is 4-over, tied for 118th.
