College Football Notes (Feb. 22, 2016)

The National Football Foundation is saluting Black History Month at the NFF College Hall of Fame in historic Atlanta, Ga., as well as through several initiatives with schools and conferences. Some of the African American pioneers in the sport have been Iowa’s Duke Slater, Brown’s Fritz Pollard, Amherst’s William H. Lewis, Alabama’s Wilbur Jackson and John Mitchell, and UCLA’s Jackie Robinson among the thousands who broke racial barriers in college football and became national leaders. Maryland and Virginia Tech will meet again four times from 2026-29…Northern Illinois and Toledo will kick off the first college game at U.S. Cellular Field (home of the American League Chicago White Sox) on Nov. 9 in Chicago…Colorado State and Oregon State will play in 2017 and ’20…Alabama and Arkansas State’s 2018 meeting will bring a solid reward in terms of a game guarantee for the Red Wolves…Nevada and Oregon State have decided not to play during the 2017 season and are seeking other opponents. The same goes for a previously-slated Boston College-Richmond matchup…Abilene Christian will travel to SMU in 2021 in the second-ever meeting between the schools after they played in 1925…Kickoff for the annual Nebraska Red-White spring game on April 16 will be 1 p.m. (CDT)…Texas University Interscholastic High Schools just completed classification and re-districting procedures for the 2016 football season…The NFF has requested a new helmet with updated logo for Texas Wesleyan for the NFF College Hall of Fame as the Rams resume their football program in 2017.

2009 William V. Campbell Award recipient Tim Tebow of Florida will be the featured speaker at the Blue Mountain (Miss.) College Scholarship Gala at the BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo, Miss., on Tuesday, April 12. There also is a possibility that 2016-17 CFP selection committee chair Kirby Hocutt of Texas Tech may be re-appointed to the group for a second term in 2017-18…Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. noted an interesting connection between the company and the Goodyear Cotton Bowl going back 100 years. In the 1915 and ’16 era Goodyear helped found several communities to produce cotton content tires along with the standard rubber versions and led to the founding of sich towns as Goodyear, Ariz….The Lockheed Martin Armed Forces and Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl are completing lists of players in each bowl who later performed in NFL Super Bowls. South Carolina athletics and Under Armour have inked a 10-year marketing and apparel contract…Georgia’s new indoor practice facility for football received $20.3 million in donations prior to last week’s groundbreaking…UAB received a $15.3 million state appropriation for a new football operations building on campus…Louisiana-Monroe’s indoor workout arena is nearing completion…Arizona students are considering a $200 activities’ fees’ increase to help fund athletics’ updates…North Dakota State athletics is working to gain additional travel funds after passage of a student fee increase for 2016-17 failed recently…Colorado is working to raise an additional $24-25 million for completion of Folsom Field’s renovation…Ole Miss athletics’ Pavilion and revamped facilities are receiving ample use from student-athletes and praise from university benefactors and fans…Baylor’s Simpson Athletics and Academic Center will be expanded and will include a performance center and accompanying equipment and facilities…Montana athletics Champions Center groundbreaking and construction are set for April.

NCAA championships official Ron Prettyman has become the new tournament director for the 2016 NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb., in June. He replaces Damani Leech, the former Princeton academic honors’ defensive back who moved into a position as an administrator at the NFL.
