There are five reasons why the Dallas Star failed to make the
2017 NHL Stanley Cup playoffs;
Goaltending: The overpriced tandem of Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi
allowed 260 goals resulting in a goals against average of 3.17 per
game which ranks 29th in the league. Last season, they allowed over 80
Defense: The youthful defense is responsible for many of the
Stars goaltending mishaps. GM Jim Nill is on the hot seat with maybe
one more season to show success on the blueline. Nill took the gamble
of allowing their top three experienced rearguardsmen go for bigger,
faster, stronger and a more error some young defense. Only newcomer Esa
Lindell played above average.
Offense: Captain Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin’s goal production
plummeted in 2017 as the team dropped from 1st with a 3.23 goals per
game to below the middle of the pack at 2.70 per game.
Penalty kill: The Stars ranked dead last in Penalty Kill at .742,
coaching needs to address this weakness.
Coaching: Lindy Ruff is not returning to be bench boss next season.
With over 1500 games in the NHL as a coach, Ruff will be replaced by a
youthful coach that can better adapt to coaching the Stars young
talent or Stanley Cup Champion coach Ken Hitchcock to satisfy the
