The SMU women’s golf team was selected as one of 18 teams to
compete at the NCAA Women’s Golf Regional held in Albuquerque, at the
University of New Mexico Championship Course May 8-10. The Regional is
one of four held across the country.
Joining the 18 teams will be six individuals, all with the goal
to qualify for the NCAA Championship held May 19-24 at Rich Harvest
Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. The top six teams from each Regional
will earn a Championship berth, as well as the top three individuals
from non-qualifying teams. SMU is the No. 11 seed at the event.
The Regional bid is the ninth overall and fifth consecutive for
the Mustangs, with the highest placement coming in 2004 when SMU tied
for ninth at the tournament. The Mustangs are also seeking their first
NCAA Championship appearance since 1992.
SMU finished second at the 2016 American Athletic Conference
Championship, while individual Brigitte Dunne was the event runner-up.
The Mustangs are currently ranked 40th in the latest edition of the
Golfstat rankings.   Overall, the Mustangs posted a pair of top-five
finishes in 11 tournaments this season. On Oct. 15, the Ponies reached
their highest Golfstat ranking of 20th.
