It has been 5 years since the Dallas Stars celebrated with such
a high draft pick in the NHL Amateur draft. With the 7th selection
overall, then GM Joe Niewendyks’ choice was TEAM USA Goalie Jack
Campbell…. over whom he selected, fellow Gold Medal winner and TEAM
USA’s top defenseman Cam Fowler who was their team Captain. While
Fowler has gone on to six steady seasons in the NHL including an all
star appearance with the Anaheim Ducks. Campbell can only boast one
appearance in the NHL.
As one of the big three winners in this season’s draft lottery
the Stars jump from 8th to third assuring the team of a bona fide
regular next season.
Richard Jackman who was 5th in 1996 and Scott Glennie who was
8th overall in the NHL Amateur Draft for Dallas have never contributed
to the team..”It’s a very valuable asset,” general manager Jim Nill
said. “You clearly want to pick as high as you can, and we’re moving
from eighth to third, so that’s a huge deal for us.”
The Stars still have a chance at a second first-round pick.
They’ll get Anaheim’s first-rounder if the Ducks win their West
semifinal playoff series vs. Edmonton, though the Ducks are trailing
2-0. That pick would be in the 28-31 range.
