The first five NCAA FBS matchups for Saturday, Aug. 26, have been finalized and will have Oregon State at Colorado State, 1 p.m. (MDT) on CBSSN, USF at San Jose State, 4:30 p.m. (PDT) on CBSSN, Rice vs. Stanford (in Sydney, Australia), 9 p.m. (CDT), ESPN or ESPN2, Hawai’i at Massachusetts, time and telecast TBD, Portland State at BYU, time and telecast TBD…The Atlantic Coast Conference and Notre Dame have agreed on five ACC opponents for the Fighting Irish from 2018-2037 as part of their cooperative agreements. Clemson will face the Fighting Irish eight times over the 20-year period while in 2036 Notre Dame is scheduled to travel to Virginia Tech for a Labor Day evening primetime fracas…BYU and Liberty will play in 2019 and ’22…UAB and Georgia Southern will meet in 2022 and ’23…Oklahoma State will host Western Illinois in 2020…Auburn has finalized its 2018 home schedule with the addition of Liberty…New Mexico State is making adjustments to its 2018 and ’19 schedules as a FBS independent…Liberty will host Old Dominion in the 2018 season opener for both schools. Rice sported the top Academic Progress Rate among NCAA FBS schools in Texas over the most recent survey rate. Conference USA had three teams among the Top Five within the state of Texas in terms of APR rankings. Texas led all Big 12 Conference schools in APR totals…Rice athletics also continues to assist area farm producers with the Rice Farmers Market, Rice Stadium West Stadium parking lot, on selected Tuesday afternoons throughout the year…Head coach Frank Ruona of the San Quentin (Calif.) 1,000-Mile Running Club, is working through sports and distance running to help rehabilitate inmates.
Memphis head coach Mike Norvell earned a contract extension through the 2021 season…New Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck had salaries approved for his top assistant coaches…Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops and wife Carol have purchased new real estate in the Chicago area…Colorado head coach Mike MacIntyre is on the cover and featured in the May edition of Colorado’s popular Mile High Sports Magazine…Penn State head coach James Franklin is in negotiations for a probable contract extension…The Texas Board of Regents is set to authorize and finalize head coach Tom Herman’s coaching staff contracts…Alabama head coach Nick Saban and 2009 NFF William V. Campbell Award recipient Tim Tebow were featured in an Orlando Sentinel story about giving back to their respective publics and communities. Tebow also signed a multi-year contract extension with the SEC Network last week…LSU head coach Ed Orgeron is bringing the entire LSU staff to Tulane for a June 9 football satellite camp. Michigan earlier was going to take its staff to New Orleans for the satellite event…Oklahoma inked offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley to a three-year contract extension…UAB named Hindley Brigham running backs coach…Kansas State football is discussing Sean Snyder, son of NFF College Hall of Fame head coach Bill Snyder of KSU, as Bill Snyder’s possible successor…Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema and South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp were subjects of a sterling newspaper account about information technology innovations and possibilities in Southeastern Conference football. The nearly-completed 2016-17 NCAA FBS bowl was revealed last week, and the latest version of the postseason slate will be available on the NFF official website in coming days… The 2017 Goodyear Cotton Bowl will air at 7:30 p.m. (CST) on Friday, Dec. 29, for the earliest date in Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic annals dating to 1937…ESPN and Conference USA’s 2017 bowl partners have denoted dates and sites for the 2017-18 postseason. The league has six guaranteed bowl spots in 2017 along with one secondary selection. The 2017 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl will kick off on Saturday, Dec. 16, at noon (CST) to open the bowl season with C-USA and Sun Belt Conference teams pitted.
Big 12 Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby has proposed a three-month signing window (possibly at even earlier dates) for football prospective student-athlete seniors from Sept. 1-Dec. 1 each year…Conference USA has discussed moving championships events to both Frisco, Texas, and Myrtle Beach, S.C., in future years…Oklahoma administrators discussed existing contracts for the next eight years to keep the Sooners and Big 12 Conference cohorts in expanding financial situations and their benefits…Valparaiso is leaving the Horizon League to join the Missouri Valley Conference…At last week’s conference meetings, Pac-12 administrators and executives prepared for a bright future…Conference USA has signed new sponsorship agreements with The First, A National Banking Association – starting with the 2017 TFANBA C-USA baseball tournament…Big Ten Conference commissioner Jim Delany is receiving a 2017 performance bonus and handshakes from the league’s ADs…The Big East Conference named Michael Coyne senior director for men’s basketball operations, Michael Sainte director of compliance and membership services and Ujash Patel coordinator of digital production.

San Diego State football and men’s basketball are moving the sports’ radio flagship location to XTRA 1360-AM radio…College Sports Weekly nationally syndicated radio show interviewed legendary broadcaster Dick Enberg about his 60-year career in college and professional athletics as well as the CoSIDA Dick Enberg Award for Academic Excellence.
The Collegiate Commissioner Association approved the early signing period (Dec. 20-22) for high school football seniors… Multiple media outlets discussed the NCAA’s new four-game football redshirt options for ‘17…CoSIDA Hall of Fame member and past president Langston Rogers was featured for an organizational-record 52 CoSIDA national workshops attended since the original gathering in Chicago in 1958…CoSIDA members Aaron Sagraves of Cornerstone, Mike Gambardella of Catholic U., Sam Atkinson of Gallaudet, and Rob Carolla of the Big 12 Conference have been featured in recent the group’s national Open Forum discussions and updates.
Correspondent/Columnist Bo Carter recalls his 30-year anniversary of covering college baseball daily in Texas since he joined the Southwest Conference in 1986-87, and here are some of his recollections:
1990 SWC Baseball – While future Big 12 Conference (then in the Big Eight) powerhouse Oklahoma State and head coach Gary Ward made it to the NCAA championship game and fell to Georgia 4-3, SWC powers Arkansas and Texas powered their way through the conference race with head coach Norm DeBriyn’s Razorbacks winning the regular-season crown and Texas hosting and capturing the SWC postseason joust. Both UA (at the NCAA Central Regional in Wichita, Kan.) and UT (hosting the NCAA South Central Regional in Austin) were eliminated in the opening rounds of the ’90 title tourney.
